GL1000 Engine Restoration

Beautiful GL1000 engine restoration by customer Tom Cox of Loveland, Colorado

Note: the table below is adapted slightly and reprinted with permission from the Classic Wing Club (originally posted here).

Also, engine and frame numbers on these machines were never intended by Honda to “match” exactly.  So long as the numbers are “close” and within the expected numerical range shown below, you probably have the original engine/frame combination as manufactured.

  1. Forgot to mention if the old VIN number is ONLY 13 digits vs the “new” rules are it is supposed to be 17 digits.
How does one make the old number of 13 digits to 17 digits?
    😉

    1. Hey Karlott, the DMV uses the entire VIN to register and track your vehicles. They typically do not alter or change the number when recorded as they understand there have been evolutions in the vehicle identification numbering process over time leading us to the current 17 digits. There are certainly different policies and procedures by state and region so it’s always best to contact your local division and get word direct from the authority. Thanks for reading the article and certainly for reaching out. Hope you get registered and riding sooner than later.

  2. Hi.
If my VIN number is: GL1-1000190 then what is the number which is used for the bike in the register at DMV?
    Thanks for the answers,
    Karlott

  3. I have a 1978 Honda Goldwing VIN GL1-4056673 how will this translate to the 17 digit standard vin code used now? I have a pdf picture of the VIN from the frame. HELP ME PLEASE?!?! It was made in Japan if that helps any. Please let me know what information that you have for me to get a converted 17 digit standard vin code. At present I do not have the title yet because it was not with the bike when I purchased it however I have been told it is in the mail and should be here soon. I’m hoping it has the correct 17 digit vin code on it but I need parts to get it running smoothly again for which I’m in a desperate search for the converted vin. Please and thank you very much.

  4. My son bought me a project bike for Christmas. Its goldwing gl1000 vin number is gl1 10000088 this is going to be a fun project.

  5. I own three 1976 yellow Honda Goldwings. One is a naked bike in excellent condition. One is in good running condition. The third bike has 14,000 miles and hasn’t ran for a few years. My question is how many yellow Goldwings were sold? I have read only 500 were sent to dealers and because yellow was not a popular color the plating was changed.

  6. Trying to determine if someone swapped some cams from a later model bike into mine. When i bought the bike, it came with a spare head and the previous owner said he go it from the person he bought it from. Are there any identifiers on the cams or heads that will tell me what year bike they came from?

    Thanks,

    -Matt

  7. Hi Mr. Randakk, my name is Paola and I am writing to you from Italy, I have two GL 1000s, one LTD from 1976 and one yellow from 1976, I ask you that I see from everything you write, that you are a true enthusiast and expert of this model, is it possible to know, perhaps year by year, how many GL units have been built?
in Italy it is impossible to know
    Thank you in advance
    Paola

  8. have 2 sets of carbs for 77 vin# 764A, 755A from 75 & a parcel set from 78 vin# 771A from Canada will 764A which U.S. 764a or 755A will work best on my 76 GL 1000 K1

  9. hi there Randakk…i have a ’78’ apparently that has GL1E-4061246 and GL1-4061303…
do you know what they correspond to please?..

  10. Hi. I’m having a problem identifying my GL1000 that I have owned from 1 year old. It was registered in the uk in 1976. Engine No GL1E-2012557. Frame No GL2012276. I guess it is an early one as the chrome carb strips don’t cover the linkage.
I’d really appreciate your help identifying it as I can’t match it with the table above.
I’m currently restoring it after 25 years in storage (peskie kids)
    Many thanks.
    Phil

      1. Hi Randy, I just picked up an LTD “Parts Bike” complete, Frame # 2038696. I am in the Vancouver BC area. So it looks like maybe Honda made a few more after their initial run. The bike has all of the LTD bits and a short owner history so I am sure of its provenance.
        Still riding daily ’75 CB400F, ’75 GL1000, ’76 GL1000 LTD, ’62 CA105T. Thanks for helping to keep them going.

        Best Regards

        Bill

    1. Dear all at Randakk

I’ve been studiously working and tinkering on my GL1000 of which I thought it to be a 1977 K2, European model. Living in Belgium (Europe) must have made me believe so. All of a sudden I realize: it has comstar wheels & miles per hour clock readings (clocks were safely stored from the off that is why I never payed attention in the first place, shame on me).
I am confused now as the number on the carbs says 755C. According to my well used Honda Parts List #4, 1977 (covering GL1000/LTD/K1/K2 models) such carb numer means: E (England) or ED (European direct sales), or F (France) or G (Germany). Engine serial number says 3026791, final drive number says F-1060696.
      Where did I go wrong?

  11. Hi I have a Honda Goldwing GL 1000, The Motor number its: GL-1E 1006742, and de frame number its: GL1-1006595 Dont have the original documents and the factory plate its losse. And I dont know the model year.
In the paper read 1974 ( non original)

Any help its wellcom and gread to me.

    Tanks

  12. Is there a way of “knowing” that a yellow bike actually came with the correct bodywork, (by the VIN)??? I read somewhere that there only 500 yellow bikes produced? Thanks Randall….See you at Barber in 10 days.

    1. Yes, the generally accepted number is that 500 yellow bikes were made for the 1976 model year. Unfortunately, there is no coding in the VIN# for body color, so there is no sure way to know if a bike was originally yellow other than good owner documentation. Sometimes color is listed on the original Bill of Sale or other dealer paperwork. Also, many yellow bikes were considered hard to sell by dealers and were changed to other colors before they were sold.

  13. I am looking at one listed as a 1977 model, but it has the comstar Wheels, not wire Wheels. VIN GL13021058. Is it possible this is actually a 1978 ?

    1. I see now it`s not a 1978, as it has different body work. Is it possible the ComStar Wheels were delivered on some 1977`s ?

      1. OK, someone is telling me those are not ComStars. It has been suggested they might be aftermarket wheels from Lester, which might make sense since the 77′ should come with spoke wheels.

        1. Letters are fairly rare but a great period correct aftermarket upgrade. I’ve run them on several GL1000s and like them a lot. Most Lester rear wheels for the GL1000 are 16″ but I”ve managed to snag a few very rare 18″ rears.

          1. I did purchase this bike and confirmed it says Lester on the wheels when I picked it up. They are in great condition and I really like them.

  14. What does it mean for the VIN’s to “match”? Meaning numbers are exactly the same? I recently bought a ’75 GL1000 with an engine VIN around 1005574 and frame VIN around 10005670. Does this mean they are from separate bikes?

    1. Engine and frame numbers on these machines were never intended by Honda to “match” exactly. So long as the numbers are “close” and within the expected numerical range shown in the table above, you probably have the original engine/frame combination as manufactured.

  15. Hi
